All I can say is that I use HD-Driver 6.30 and it works excellent. No
problems whatsoever, neither with IDE nor SCSI. I don't have any
removable media though.

And I can't imagine that the driver can speed up anything, both my IDE
and SCSI-drives drives the hardware to the limit already.
