Just a few notes....
I spent about six hours desoldering the 040 CPU from my Afterburner
today ( I was one of the unlucky ones that had the CPU soldered
directly to the card) and installed a socket for the 040. I have an
40Mhz RC040 that I installed (reason for the effort).
My machine has been rock solid at 40Mhz, and I can run up to 42Mhz,
but with DMA problems (I haven't tried tweeking the buffer resistor
yet) with the 33Mhz processor. Anything over 42Mhz and the machine
locks up. That sounded about right as my 33Mhz Mac craps out at about
that clock rate.
I thought that the problem was processor related, but I found that
even with the 40Mhz 040, I was limited (?:) to the same speed. So
unless messing with the buffer mod makes any difference (this is a
weekend project) I would have to say that the 40Mhz chip is probably a
waste of time, considering the risk I took desoldering it (if you have
a socket, then it is just a small matter of cash:).
If adjusting the buffer makes any difference, I'll post the results.
Best Wishes,
Mike
