I don't pretend to have understood much of your post Mike but this
mention of 8MHz made me think.

Surely most of the AB runs at 32MHz, except for the link to the Falcon
motherboard whose buses run at 16MHz. Is that right?

Anyway, I seem to remember that if I bypassed all AB040 patches etc.
during boot up and then ran a SysInfo type prog it would claim the CPU
was an 68020 running at 8MHz. I realise that these may not mean
anything but it was consistent and the performace was definitely sub
16MHz.

Was this 8MHz mode some sort of deliberate ultimate backward
compatibility mode?

Again I stress that this was from observation and not knowledge.
