Incidentally, - did anyone replace the SCC with an ESCC in their AB040?
Was it easy? (I imagine one would cut off the old part and then extract
the pins one by one before inserting the new chip).

IIRC the HSMODEM docs indicate that a ESCC allows 4 byte transfers and
reduces cpu load on Falcons.
A reduction of cpuload didn't matter too much before... but now I run
CAB/STING rather than CONNECT/GSZRZ I think the extra cpu might be
welcome (maybe not much difference, but if the serial keeps making
interrupts...).

(A while ago I tried van jacobsen header compression with STING and it
seemed to be giving me some hangs... so I disabled it. That is one thing
that might be better with more cpu)
